Find Out How You Learn Best

Your first job as a student should be to figure how you learn.  Most people can be categorized into 4 different learning categories: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic.

Depending where your strengths are, you’ll need to tailor your study schedule to your advantage.  For example, if you are a visual learner you shouldn’t be wasting time listening to audio only information.  When you know how you learn best, your study sessions become more productive and you know what to listen for in class.

Seek Help

Falling behind in University level and above classes is a huge issue.  In these classes it’s not only important to retain information but also thoroughly understand theories and concepts.  Even if you feel you have a good understanding of the material, seeking help is a great way to connect with other people and confirm your knowledge.

Make use of any teaching assistants or resources that your course offers.  Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher or a fellow student about any questions you may have.

Participate in class

Some people may feel like they can learn and do well without participating in class.  This may be true but class participation is a key component in your learning experience.  Participating in class allows you to talk through the concepts discussed, which actually advances your own understanding of it.  Participation also gets you more engaged with the material, which makes it easier to understand new concepts.

Participating in class allows you to build rapport with the professor and your classmates.  Of course you don’t want to be that annoying person who answers every single question!

Lastly, class participation will probably boost your grade.  In some classes participation is a graded requirement.  In other situations, your professor may grade you favorably simply because they remember your enthusiasm for the class.

Talk with the professor

Getting to know the professor can be a great move for your career.  Generally, professors are good people to know in your industry.  Developing a relationship with the professor gives you access to a credible person who can provide job or character references. And as said before, they may grade you favorably.  The importance of education lays in the relationships you make.

Treat School Like A Job

Your success will depend on how disciplined you can be with your studies.  During the week you should be waking up at the same time every day, even if you don’t have class.  Waking up at a set time helps you to create a natural routine.  This is especially crucial during higher education.

You also need to have set study times.  Everyone’s life is different so you’ll have to plan accordingly.  If you know you work in the evening make sure you set time aside in the morning or afternoon to get in a few hours of concentrated studying.  The times you block off for studying needs to be distraction free and focused.

The way in which you dress also affects how disciplined you are.  Even if it’s acceptable to wear sweat pants to class, you’ll feel more serious and more engaged when wearing an appropriate outfit.  Remember, when you’re a student school is your job especially at higher education levels.  There is no dress code so it’s up to you to decide how you want to show up to work.  On your days off you should also get dressed before starting your day.  You may have a tendency to stay in your pajamas and get some work done but again, your outfit sets the tone. You may be at home but you’re still working.
